Blek Le Rat

Described as the “father of stencil graffiti” Blek Le Rat has been hugely influential in the world of street art, even for the work of the biggest street artist of the 21st Century, Banksy. Banksy has acknowledged Blek Le Rat’s significance saying “every time I think I’ve painted something slightly original, I find out that Blek Le Rat has done it as well, only twenty years earlier”. Blek Le Rat’s work began on the streets of Paris in 1981 but it was not until 2006 that the artist has his first UK solo show at Leonard Street Gallery, breaking America just two years later with an exhibition at Subliminal Projects Gallery in Los Angeles. Still the artist prefers to paint walls, than to show in galleries, stating that it is essential that an artist is seen by as many people as possible, rather than focusing on gallery sales or museum shows.
