Damien Hirst first conceived of the idea of spot paintings in his Brixton studio in 1992. It was at an art fair ‘A Féte Worse than Death’ that the artist alongside Angus Fairhurst produced spin paintings with a signature for £1 (for an extra pound the artists would drop their trousers revealing painted genitals). Hurst’s free-spirited spin paintings stand in stark contrast to the rigidity and order of the spots. The outcome of his spin paintings is largely spontaneous, down to the mechanical workings of the artist’s machinery. Hirst comments, “I really like making them. And I really like the machine, and I really like the movement. Every time they’re finished, I’m desperate to do another one”.
